Position Overview

The Department of Geomatics in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate in Multi-sensor Systems. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The research associate will play a critical role in the high-level leadership of the group, working closely with the Principal Investigator to determine the course of the group.  This will include contributing to research and funding strategies, identifying and helping to secure funding opportunities and shaping the vision, direction and structure of the group.

The Research Associates will play a key role in all activities undertaken by the research team spanning from hands on technical tasks to high level leadership and visioning.  The research associate will have an expert knowledge of the hands-on work performed as part of the operations and development activities of the group.  This position will be responsible for all project and operations level management of a lab or the group, including schedules, budgets, personnel and technical output.  The research associate will prepare and submit documentation and other deliverables, technical and financial, required by funding agencies and collaborators.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Conduct literature reviews, design required experiments, and develop new approaches for the following mobile multi-sensor research interests:
    • Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)/Inertial Navigation System(INS) integration (Analysis of IMUs performance, filtering techniques such as EKF, unscented, and particle filters, constrained Kalman filter)
    • Indoor localization (conducting experiments and develop approaches for pedestrian IMU navigation, wireless localization,2D laser based localization)
    • Aided navigation using multi-sensor/data systems (visual aided navigation, map matching aided navigation, Vehicle dynamic model aided navigation)
    • Indoor mapping ( Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) using range sensors such as Kinect and 2D range finders and real-time scan matching)
    • LiDAR processing (automatic registration of point clouds, point cloud segmentation, automatic classification of LiDAR data such as buildings, vegetation, roads, cars, curbs)
    • Aerial/satellite image processing (image segmentation, Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA), Image stitching, automatic detection of environmental changes through image-driven 2D/3D representations, image classification using artificial intelligence techniques such as SVM, random forests, neural networks)
    • Fusion of images and LiDAR data (system calibration of LiDAR/Camera systems, Collaborative segmentation of hybrid data, Collaborative classification of hybrid data)
  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Assist with project planning, progress monitoring, and technical implementation and testing of the projects deliverables
  • Supervise other junior team members in technical implementation, testing phases
  • Represent research team at national and international meetings, conferences, and seminars
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Provide technical support for others through consultation on research issues
  • Identify and pursue national and international research and development opportunities to help in writing proposals for collaboration agreements and funds
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD of Geomatics Engineering with minimum of three years of experience of doctoral academic research
  • Minimum 3-years of experience and knowledge of theory and practical application of different navigation technologies (INS, GPS, SLAM, Computer vision aided navigation,  Map Matching - Wireless localization) on different platforms
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of (Aerial and satellite image processing, photogrammetry, LiDAR processing, Artificial intelligence)
  • Hands-on experience in inertial navigation, image processing, computer vision and point cloud data processing
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation, and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced or expert skills in software design and development using C++, C#, Matlab, OpenGL
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success

Additional Information

This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit, and falls under the Technical Job Family, Phase II.  Salary range $31.81-$46.05 per hour
