The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in “Human Interaction and Analytics within Virtual Environments”.

Job Description:

Focusing on Human Interaction and Analytics within Virtual Environments, the R&D project is to address the challenges of accurately communicating/displaying multi-dimensional information to human users in the most efficient and effective manner.  Based on a Virtual-Reality (VR) platform of interactive and visual analytics, a key aspect of the project is accommodating human cognitive constraints to achieve new insights about highly complex multisensory data and to handle ill-defined and unstructured phenomena.

The project is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada. The working environment includes the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary. The Postdoctoral Fellow will have opportunities to engage in research collaborating closely with researchers/engineers/scientists from national and international research institutes and industry.  The position offers a unique multidisciplinary opportunity to be part of cutting edge R&D on VR applications.

R&D Objectives: The research of the Postdoctoral Fellow will focus on the following objectives:

  • Neural mechanisms of multi-sensory integration for facilitating interactive and visual analytics of complex data;
  • Algorithms of the multi-sensory integration based upon the neural mechanisms;
  • Evaluation of the prototype of VR systems.


  • PhD in the computer science, engineering, or other related fields: The applicant must have completed (or be within three months of completing) their degree. Applicants who hold the degree must have obtained it within the last five years or have been actively working in a related field.
  • Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) and neurosciences: Sound experience in BMI and good knowledge of neurosciences are essential.  Familiarization with EEG devices, eye trackers and associated data processing are very desirable. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated BMI research activities. 
  • Software development: Solid and demonstrated software development experience is essential.  Working knowledge of Machine Learning would be desirable.
  • Usability Engineering:  Knowledge of testing and evaluating the usability of software/hardware systems is desirable.  Knowledge and experience of VR technologies would be an asset.
  • Communication: The applicant must possess excellent English written and verbal communication. The role will involve a significant amount of communication between varying levels of personnel in academia and industries. The applicant must be capable of communicating potential complex concepts in terms understandable by the various groups involved.
  • Working Style: The applicant must be capable of working in a self-directed/motivated manner and within a team environment.
