Position Overview

The Department of Communications in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Regular Digital Specialist.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications and Marketing in the Schulich School of Engineering, the Digital Specialist manages the online presence of the Schulich School of Engineering and its academic departments and units, which include a faculty-wide website, dozens of individual unit pages as well as a series of digital newsletters, announcements, invitations, e-marketing and social media. This is a regular, full-time position, 35 hours per week, however some evening and weekend work may be required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Accountable for the successful creation and delivery of a Schulich School of a faculty-wide website and associated unit webpages and e-newsletters that create an exceptional user experience for Schulich School of Engineering audiences and stakeholders
  • Create new webpages, make structural refinements to existing websites/pages including testing, evaluation and implementation of new web technologies
  • Upload major content revisions to new web spaces; solve technical issues
  • Create and manage e-invitations on behalf of the Schulich School of Engineering using Marketo, as well as acting as coach and trainer for Marketo for other users within the school
  • Lead review and update out of date content and improve functionality on an annual basis
  • On a rotating basis (approximately every 3-years per website), manage strategic planning, a content retirement process and major content and structural revisions to Schulich School of Engineering websites and unit web pages
  • Consult with Department Heads, Associate Deans and unit Directors and create strategic plans for all digital communications/marketing projects including Schulich School of Engineering websites as per above, social media, and digital campaigns
  • Coach/train academic writers/approvers and content experts in producing content that will meet user needs and create a high quality user experience with the Schulich School of Engineering digital assets
  • Write/edit/re-write text content for websites
  • Create web communications strategies and organizational structure for website content, write, and edit content, and advise on incorporating digital technologies into websites
  • Regularly assess the content of department and unit websites/webpages and plan and implement re-design, and re-organization and creation of content
  • Create website, social media, and other digital strategies that enhance user experiences with Schulich School of Engineering digital communications and which align with the digital marketing strategy for the institution
  • Create and administer paid social media advertising campaigns and adwords
  • Work with the Schulich Marketing and Communications team to plan content for the Schulich School of Engineering homepage, and regular digital newsletters, including tracking faculty and research news, daily media clips, events, university-wide initiatives, writing news briefs and internal stories
  • Strategically assess the Schulich School of Engineering's social media activities at the faculty and department levels. Develop and manage social media for the school; create a content calendar and social media campaigns; manage Schulich School Engineering participation in institutional social media campaigns; manage customized Hootsuite for the school and departments
  • Work with the manager and provide advice on incorporating the Schulich School's web spaces and other digital media into the Schulich marketing and communication strategies
  • Create a digital strategy that fits within the Schulich School's long-term strategic plan and communications and marketing plans
  • Plan and implement a three-year content retirement cycle for Schulich School of Engineering websites and unit pages to retire old content and revise/rewrite/restructure the presentation of content in a manner that aligns with strategic marketing and communications priorities of the Schulich School of Engineering and the University of Calgary
  • Make resource recommendations for future digital needs and opportunities
  • Establish and communicate a detailed website governance structure for the Schulich School of Engineering
  • Provide direction on maintenance of the main Schulich School of Engineering website and creation/implementation of digital assets, including e-newsletters
  • Establish and maintain linkages with key members of the digital marketing team in University Relations and bring updates and learning to the Schulich Communications and Marketing team
  • Ensure all Schulich School of Engineering digital communications align with the university and the school's digital strategy and maintain brand identity and standards
  • Establish and maintain linkages with the University of Calgary IT department around significant web issues and opportunities; liaise with other university web and social media owners
  • Act as a resource for other team members for digital marketing and communications

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in marketing, digital media, information design or a related field
  • Knowledge and 8 -10 years' experience in web management and social media, creating and managing content architecture for websites and other digital communications
  • Must have past experience with content management systems such as Drupal, website administration and Google analytics
  • Experience with web technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML and JavaScript
  • Experience managing cross-browser content and design issues
  • Experience producing visual components for the web; ability to configure and manipulate images
  • Experience creating social media campaigns, including paid social media campaigns
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • Excellent web writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated judgement and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of design principles
  • Experience with design and layout tools such as Adobe CS (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and experience with Marketo e-marketing platform is an asset
  • Demonstrated abilities for innovation and problem-solving
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple complex tasks and competing priorities, to meet short deadlines, and maintain the highest standards of quality and attention to detail
  • Ability to grasp and learn new technologies; interest in remaining at the forefront of trends and technologies; willingness to experiment with new ideas and tools
